TREE AID - working with Tree Appeal

“Before the TREE AID project there were only a few trees.
Now our village is like a green island” – Mengesha Beyene, village elder, Ethiopia.

TREE AID are working with Tree Appeal to help deliver our Tree Twinning initiative.

TREE AID is the only UK charity focussed on supporting rural African villagers in the fight against poverty, using trees. Working in some of the poorest countries in the world, TREE AID funds training in tree care so villagers can learn how to raise and protect trees to improve their environment, their health and their local economy.

Established in 1987, TREE AID has supported over 400,000 villagers to establish 1,200 tree nurseries, and raise 7.5 million tree seedlings. Mainly using native trees adapted to the local harsh environment means the trees will often survive when other crops fail. Fruit, nuts, leaves, and even sap can all be eaten to provide a more varied and nutritious diet. Many trees also have medicinal properties and can be used to treat everything from malaria to hepatitis.

From shelter to animal fodder, compost to cosmetics, trees offer families the sustainable tools they need to become self reliant. When you plant a tree with TREE AID, it is so much more than just a tree. Selling tree products provides money to pay for education, food and other essentials, so villages begin to thrive, not just survive.

“What I love about this organisation is that it combines a deep, long-standing concern for the environment, with the important objective of alleviating poverty” – Jonathan Dimbleby, broadcaster & journalist and TREE AID patron
