Planting day at White Laith Primary School, Whinmoor, Leeds

November 2009

White Laith Primary School in Whinmoor, was visited by representatives of construction company RG Group to help the pupils and staff plant trees in the school grounds. The trees were all native British species such as Hawthorn, Silver Birch, Dogwood and Rowan, all grown in England from collected seed.

White Laith is a vibrant, energetic, positive school community in which everyone works and learns together with the desire and determination to succeed. Children are actively encouraged to take full responsibility for not only their own learning and actions but for the collective successes of the school. White Laith is a school where the personal and social growth and aspirations of all the community (children, parents, governors and staff) are respected and valued.

Mrs Sheerin, Head Teacher at White Laith, said, “100 trees planted by 60 children in less than 2 hours - amazing! Thank you to the very generous sponsors, RG group, for a wonderful morning. The children were really excited by the tree planting, were interested in the different types of trees and loved the worms! Because they did the hard work, they are keen to look after the trees and have told all the other children in school about them. All the children are looking forward to seeing them grow. An excellent morning, really well organised and a real pleasure. The only disappointment is that the rest of the school wanted to plant too - we'll have to ask you to come back again!”

The children had an opportunity to gain hands-on experience of how trees are planted and to learn how important trees are to the world in which we live. Two comments form them were, “It was great planting trees. I haven't planted anything before", and, "The playground will look beautiful when they grow won't it!".

RG Group have teamed up with Carbon Footprint as part of their carbon management programme and with Tree Appeal, planting native broadleaf trees in schools. RG Group are sponsoring the planting of more than 100 trees at White Laith Primary, demonstrating their commitment to environmental education and their aim of reducing their impact on the natural world.

Colorado Goldwyn, Environmental Manager for RG Group said, “Being a Construction Company with offices in Central Leeds and projects in the area it is great to be able to offset our carbon and also have a positive and lasting impact in the communities in which we work. I would like to thank the teachers and children of White Laith Primary School for making it such a rewarding and memorable day for RG Group.”
