Planting day at West London Academy with Kent Services

June 2010

Over the past two years, Tree Appeal has planted over two thousand trees at West London Academy in Northolt. Some of these saplings were sponsored by Kent Services and on a pleasant day in June, representatives from the company took the time to visit the school and check on the progress of the saplings. The school were pleased to report that the trees are doing fantastically well and have made a remarkable improvement to what would otherwise have been wasteland.

During the visit, Kathy Amey and Colin Gunn from Kent Services helped the Tree Appeal team and Professor David Bellamy, as well as staff and students from West London Academy, plant five feature trees, forming a picturesque border along the edge of the school’s existing plantation.

The Academy Fields planting site, where Kent Services’ sponsored trees are growing, is set in over five acres of land, which has undergone an extensive programme of tree planting and includes a large pond and a weather station. There are also two covered outdoor classrooms, with seating for sixty students. The location sits adjacent to the busy A40, but whilst walking around, it would be hard to feel further away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Kathy Amey said, “The staff and children are so enthusiastic, as is David Bellamy who simply bubbles over with it! It was very rewarding to see the project brought to life and see what a real difference all the trees are going to make to the school. We are glad to be able to make a contribution.”

Environmental education is an essential part of the West London Academy’s curriculum. Many of their students live in the city centre and have limited access to gardens or other wildlife habitats. The school are committed to developing this safe haven for their pupils to explore the natural world and experience a hands-on approach to learning about the environment.

Joanne Chodzko-Zajko, Family Learning Tutor at the West London Academy said, “It is important to us to make the most of the space we have available. We’re lucky to have such extensive grounds and with the help of sponsoring companies like Kent Services, we are able to enhance our outdoor space and create something really special for our students.”
